I have an honest question about how food stamps work?

TANF is used on the same card, it's government provided money for basic essentials which I believe can be used for any thing except alcohol. It's for very low income people, I looked into it once and i wouldn't qualify unless I was unemployed or if I worked part time and made no more than minimum wage.
