Gay people who are offended by the word "queer": got any suggestions on words that can adequately replace it?

If you change queer to something else. People will just use the new word in offense. I don't mind if someone calls me a queer as long as they aren't saying it to be mean. I have a huge problem with the words f@g and dyke.
