What were you taught about homosexuals back in the 1950s and 60s and what did you think about them?

Or if you are gay and you knew it back then what was it like for you? I am watching this documentary on PBS about what it was like for gays and lesbians in the 50s and 60s in the USA and it's terrible. I'm shocked I never learned any of this in history. They are showing clips from these horrible propaganda PSAs and even a news report that was on CBS telling people that homosexuals were dangerous and saying they ought to be arrested. There is a clip of this guy speaking to school kids and scaring the crap out of them about homosexuality. They talked about Atascadero psych hospital which was a hospital they called "dachau for queers." A guy said that a friend of his was put in a psychiatric hospital for being gay and they gave him this electric therapy that left him a vegetable. This was supposed to be America??? And why doesn't this part of history make it into history books?
